History of Rath Yatra
According to the story of Krishna, once Lord Krishna was sleeping during the night in Dwarka. Rukmani was also sleeping nearby. Shri Krishna chanted Radha’s name in his sleep. Rukmani was surprised to hear this. In the morning, Rukmani told this to other Patranis and said that even after all our service, love and dedication, Swami does not forget to remember Radha. Lord Krishna went outside Dwarka with his brother Lord Balarama.
Then the 16108 queens of Lord Krishna asked the mother that even though we are serving Lord Krishna so much, Shri Krishna ji only takes the name of Radha during the day. Then the mother said that if Krishna and Balaram do not enter the royal palace, then I will say. Then the queens kept Subhadra standing outside the door to keep an eye so that if they come, he should inform them and said that no one was allowed to enter. Then the mother continued the story.
Subhadra kept his ear on the door and started listening to the story inside. When Krishna and Balarama came back, they saw Subhadra standing with his ears at the door. When Krishna and Balarama went to enter the royal palace, Subhadra stopped them. So Krishna and Balarama, like Subhadra, kept their ears on the door and started listening to the story inside. Then suddenly, due to the feeling of devotion, the hands and feet of the three started to shrink and the eyes started to get bigger.
Just then when Narada Muni came to Dwarka to meet Lord Krishna, he saw that Lord Krishna’s hands and feet had shrunk and his eyes were enlarged. Narada Muni told Krishna Prabhu to show this form of You to the world. So Lord Krishna promised Narada Muni to show this form to the world in Treta Yuga.
Since then Balarama in the chariot goes out on the day of the chariot journey to show Subhadra and Krishna to the world. And whoever sees this chariot or pulls the rope, he is freed from all sins. The townspeople lead the procession to the temple chanting Hare Krishna Hare Rama Hare.
